Who We Are

Our mission is to empower people to create sustainable lasting change in their communities and countries through:

  • Creating Awareness of the current issues and conditions;
  • Creating Alternatives that promote dignity, justice, unity, and accountability;
  • Taking Action that supports the creation of these alternatives.

History

On February 1, 2010, severe ice storms devastated the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe in South Dakota, where more than 13,000 people went without water, heat, or electricity. The lack of response by the government prompted Chaske Spencer and his fellow Twilight cast members to join United Global Shift in creating Be The Shift.

Be The Shift spread awareness about the tribe’s struggle and asked fellow human beings for their voice to aid them in a time of need and support a sustainable solution to the tribe’s water infrastructure that would prevent a recurring crisis in following winters.

As well as donating thousands of dollars, thousands of Shifters from all over the world signed the petition and sent letters to congress urging the American government to focus their attention on the tribe’s recovery and to updating their aging infrastructure.

To date, the tribe has been able to return power, water, and heat to most of its residents with the gracious help of many organizations and voices. Currently, the United States Department of Energy is releasing $6.3 million in funding for 31 clean energy projects over the next two years for Native American tribes in the region.

Be The Shift continues to support, and encourage others to help, the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe and their continued recovery through our online petition and donations.

While Be The Shift is far larger than this isolated issue, the Cheyenne River Sioux Water Infrastructure project was a launching pad to empower people everywhere to source their own power and make lasting differences in their own communities, creating shifts that they want to see in the issues that matter to them.
